"My first born son broke my preconceived idea of motherhood. He challenged me in ways I never anticipated - He was highly sensory, didn't sleep, eat food, wear shoes, speak until 2 years of age, sit properly, let me walk into the supermarket, or even breathe correctly. Yep, that's a thing! I thought becoming a parent was a trap until i started looking at our environment and diet.
From the outside, being a former athlete, model and PE teacher, you would think i had my health all sorted. I recall running from teaching, to castings, to meetings, fuelled with an energy drink and protein bar. That would do the trick i thought. Well, it was a trick. A trick on my health. These habits brought upon fatigue, anxiety, hormonal imbalances and under-active thyroid.
Our journey began with the profound realisation: what we consume shapes our existence. From the food on our plates to the thoughts in our minds, every choice vibrates through our being.
My son's challenges stemmed not from inherent flaws, but from a toxic environment of processed foods and artificial stimuli. What was it you ask? Oh you know, just store bought yoghurt, cereal, milk, bread, margarine. All the things everyone else buys! But, it wasn't serving us and it was showing up in my child's health. As a family we rejected the status quo and became conscious of our diet and lifestyle. We overhauled our pantry and minimised our exposure to toxins. Our son went from seeing an occupational therapist, to within a matter of months being a completely unrecognisable child. My friends remind me of this remarkable change all the time. "The biggest catalyst for change in my life was losing both my mum and sister to cancer. It wasn't just a tragedy, it rattled me to my core. It forced me to confront the fragility of life and the need for change.
